SUMMARY:Relaxing Around the Inhalation led by Melanie Cook: online via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Melanie began practicing yoga and meditation in the early 1990s\, then largely to manage a back condition. She has been teaching yoga since 1995\, after having been introduced to the work of The Yoga for Health Foundation (YfHF) which was based at Ickwell Bury in Bedfordshire. After completing Teacher Training with the YfHF in 1995\, Melanie then became a resident teacher at the YfHF centre. During her time there she studied for and completed their Remedial Teacher Training Course in 1996. \n\n\n\nAfter leaving the YfHF Melanie moved to Edinburgh and later completed The Scottish Yoga Teachers Association Diploma (SYTA) in 1999. She has also completed numerous further trainings in pregnancy (with Judy Cameron)\, yoga for children (with Swami Vedantananda)\, Foundations of Pranayama (with Philip Xerri)\, Exercise Referral Level 3\, ITEC Diploma in Body Massage\, First Degree Reiki\, Indian Head\, Neck and Shoulder Massage with Narendha Mehta and an ITEC Diploma in Reflexology. \n\n\n\nFor many years Melanie has taught yoga full-time. In brief\, she has run several BWY Foundation Courses and is currently teaching a Foundation Course for Yoga Scotland in Glasgow. She developed and ran a Remedial Yoga Teacher Training course with her husband. She is co-course leader for The Scottish School of Yoga Therapy\, training yoga teachers to become yoga therapists. She also\, for a number of years organised and ran\, with her husband\, yoga holidays for disabled students in Scotland. She was also a tutor\, for approximately 11 years\, for an organisation called ‘Yoga for All’ which ran yoga holidays in Wales and The Lake District. \n\n\n\nCurrently Melanie teaches a number of classes in Edinburgh and the Lothians. These range from classes in health clubs and gyms\, to chair yoga for the elderly\, and those with long-term health conditions. She also teach classes in her own private studio and offers individual yoga sessions\, reflexology\, etc. \n\n\n\nMelanie’s teaching is focussed around breath and body awareness\, informed by both pranayama and mindfulness\, exploring our current reality and how we can expand and transform into a greater understanding of our own experience. \n\n\n\nIn this session we will explore our inhalations in greater detail\, looking specifically at how we can find softness in and around that in breath. We will explore this with Mahat Yoga Pranayama (Full breath)\, and use both dynamic and passive asana to explore ways of allowing greater soft expansion into the sides of the body in particular. We will conclude with a Kaya Kriya Pratyahara practice before moving into Yoga Nidra. \n\n\n\nThis event is offered to all members of the Yoga for Health and Education Trust (YHET) and the cost of this event will be borne by the Trust. If you have any questions about the above or suitability for participation (perhaps mobility or health issues) then please email us before registering for the event at admin@yhet.org.uk. \n\n\n\nNon-members are welcome to join us for a free taster session. \n\n\n\nPlaces on this event are limited and Registration closes on 13th October. Please note that if you are new to YHET you may be required to complete an additional online Health Questionnaire prior to attending the event. This is required for insurance purposes. \n\n\n\nYou will require Zoom set up on your PC\, laptop or mobile device prior to the session. SUMMARY:How to Find Breathing Space in Asana Practice led by Liz Williams
DESCRIPTION:Liz has studied and taught yoga and bodywork for over 35 years. She works regularly with stroke survivors and others to improve functional independence and confidence. Since the late 1990’s she studied with the late Dr M V Bhole\, both in Europe and in India\, prior to which she worked with many other teachers from various yoga traditions\, including “viniyoga” with Sri TKV Desikachar and his principal students. \nWith this combination of ancient tradition\, modern research and experience\, Liz promotes “self-help” techniques for stress-release\, body awareness and mindfulness. Her aim is to help individuals understand how bodies and minds function to improve their health\, mobility and well-being. Through exploration and curiosity\, Liz ensures that everyone learns through doing what they can\, and not being frustrated by what they can’t! This is particularly relevant when people have limitations with movement\, co-ordination or concentration as a result of genetic and other conditions or trauma of any kind such as strokes\, accidents and operations. \nJoin us online via Zoom when Liz will lead us in this How to Find Breathing Space in Asana Practice. \nCan we experience the pranic body and subtle energies in our yoga practice? \nWhen we become aware of the pranic body we open a new dimension to asana practice with the physical becoming absorbed into the subtle energy. We will practice some familiar asanas but perhaps in a less familiar way so that effort becomes effortless (cf Yoga Sutra 2.47). \nThe pace will be slow so you have time to recognise sensations from both outside and inside the body and notice how these might be affecting you in the present moment – physically\, mentally\, emotionally. There will also be effects from the past (samskaras in yoga terms) because we all carry in our bodies a legacy from lifetimes of experiences and choices. (**) \nSome of the practices will require props (according to personal need) in order to gain the necessary sthira sukha (steadiness and ease) for asana. The subtle energies of the pranic body and the breathing movements of the physical body won’t become apparent unless we reduce the tendency to “hold” a position or “take” a breath. This can be quite challenging because of habit patterns and prior experience with yoga\, exercise\, illness and life in general!! \nBe curious and ready to explore………. \nYou will need (in addition to your usual yoga mat\, etc): \n• a firm based upright chair without arms• blocks or other supports (books work well)• adequate space around you when sitting\, standing or lying• no draughts or other external distractions \n(**) This paragraph refers to the 5 external senses (jnanindriyas)\, 5 internal senses (karmindriyas) and the 5 sheaths or bodies (kosas). \nThis event is offered to all members of the Yoga for Health and Education Trust (YHET) and the cost of this event will be borne by the Trust. If you have any questions about the above or suitability for participation (perhaps mobility or health issues) then please email us before registering for the event at admin@yhet.org.uk. \nNon-members are welcome to join us for a free taster session. \nPlaces on this event are limited and Registration closes on 21st September. Please note that if you are new to YHET you may be required to complete an additional online Health Questionnaire prior to attending the event. This is required for insurance purposes. \nYou will require Zoom set up on your PC\, laptop or mobile device prior to the session. Mobile phones are not suitable for these online sessions as the screen is too small.

SUMMARY:Playing with Angles and Yoga Nidra
DESCRIPTION:Jane has used yoga as a journey of self-discovery and healing since her university days at Reading\, practising with a wide variety of teachers. She has been teaching since 1988 and is passionate about including all aspects of yoga and ancient wisdom in ways accessible to everyone and every body. She believes that her students are her greatest teachers and that she can learn from each and every one of them by observing and listening. She believes the cornerstone of yoga is ‘awareness’ and that applying this throughout practice and life we can change our physiology and thinking mind for the better.\n\nKey influences on Jane’s practice are Satyananda Yoga\, Structural and Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy\, Vinyasa\, Yin\, and Mindfulness. She has trained dozens of yoga teachers\, taught BWY Foundation Courses in Yorkshire since 2004\, offers other in-depth independent study\, workshops\, yoga retreats\, yoga holidays and since 2020 online learning.\n\nFor many years Jane regularly visited India as part of her personal journey\, staying in ashrams and attended the awe inspiring 2001 Kumbh Mela at Allahabad. She received her spiritual name\, Jayadhara\, in 1996 at the Bihar School of Yoga\, Munger. She feels that she is able to draw on many of these experiences to enhance her teaching and bring the ancient yoga traditions to life.\n\nWe invite you to join us online via Zoom for Playing with Angles and Yoga Nidra. This session will be very inclusive and will look at how the shapes of asanas work the joints\, muscles and fascia of the body and touch on how this influences the flow of prana within.\n\nYou will need a yoga mat and props you may find useful: 2 blocks\, 2 bricks. Props for Yoga Nidra relaxation: blanket\, eye pillow and warm clothing.\n\nThis event is offered to all members of the Yoga for Health and Education Trust (YHET) and the cost of this event will be borne by the Trust. For further information please email admin@yhet.org.uk\n\nNon members are welcome to join us for a free taster session.\n\nPlaces on this event are limited and Registration closes on 14th July.
