Melanie began practicing yoga and meditation in the early 1990s, then largely to manage a back condition. She has been teaching yoga since 1995, after having been introduced to the work of The Yoga for Health Foundation (YfHF) which was based at Ickwell Bury in Bedfordshire. After completing Teacher Training with the YfHF in 1995, Melanie then became a resident teacher at the YfHF centre. During her time there she studied for and completed their Remedial Teacher Training Course in 1996.
After leaving the YfHF Melanie moved to Edinburgh and later completed The Scottish Yoga Teachers Association Diploma (SYTA) in 1999. She has also completed numerous further trainings in pregnancy (with Judy Cameron), yoga for children (with Swami Vedantananda), Foundations of Pranayama (with Philip Xerri), Exercise Referral Level 3, ITEC Diploma in Body Massage, First Degree Reiki, Indian Head, Neck and Shoulder Massage with Narendha Mehta and an ITEC Diploma in Reflexology.
For many years Melanie has taught yoga full-time. In brief, she has run several BWY Foundation Courses and is currently teaching a Foundation Course for Yoga Scotland in Glasgow. She developed and ran a Remedial Yoga Teacher Training course with her husband. She is co-course leader for The Scottish School of Yoga Therapy, training yoga teachers to become yoga therapists. She also, for a number of years organised and ran, with her husband, yoga holidays for disabled students in Scotland. She was also a tutor, for approximately 11 years, for an organisation called ‘Yoga for All’ which ran yoga holidays in Wales and The Lake District.
Currently Melanie teaches a number of classes in Edinburgh and the Lothians. These range from classes in health clubs and gyms, to chair yoga for the elderly, and those with long-term health conditions. She also teach classes in her own private studio and offers individual yoga sessions, reflexology, etc.
Melanie’s teaching is focussed around breath and body awareness, informed by both pranayama and mindfulness, exploring our current reality and how we can expand and transform into a greater understanding of our own experience.
In this session we will explore our inhalations in greater detail, looking specifically at how we can find softness in and around that in breath. We will explore this with Mahat Yoga Pranayama (Full breath), and use both dynamic and passive asana to explore ways of allowing greater soft expansion into the sides of the body in particular. We will conclude with a Kaya Kriya Pratyahara practice before moving into Yoga Nidra.
