Hip Hip Hooray!: In a Nutshell: Hips

The hip joint is a synovial ball and socket joint formed by the head of the femur (ball) and the cup shaped acetabulum (socket) of the pelvis, both joint surfaces being covered with articular cartilage.

Three ligaments give stability and strength to the hip.

Synovial membrane secretes synovial fluid which lubricates the joint.

The hip has a wide range of movement: flexion, extension, abduction, (away from the midline), adduction (towards the midline), external and internal rotation.

The main muscles working the hip are iliopsoas, gluteals (buttock muscles) sartorius, adductors and hamstrings.
